Welcome to Pincher Creek!
Named in 1868 when a group of prospectors accidentally dropped a pair of valuable pincers in the creek, Pincher Creek has never relinquished its prize. Used for trimming horse hooves, the useful tool disappeared, and for many years afterwards explorers made numerous attempts at finding them. Visitors to the town today often try their hand at locating the elusive item, which still remains hidden.Many of Pincher Creek's residents are descendants of its original pioneers, whose industriousness is commemorated at the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The Lebel Mansion Historic Site invites those curious about history inside one of the town's earliest and most attractive homes, and Heritage Acres recreates a 19th century farm. Just outside of town, the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony offers a look into a truly unique culture, and also nearby, outdoor activities abound at the Oldman River Dam Provincial Recreation Area, where kites are often flown at Windy Point. “Naturally powerful”, the town is one of Alberta's leaders in wind technology, where huge turbines harness plenty of alternative energy from the ever-active environment.
Tourist Attractions
Named after frontiersman John George 'Kootenai' Brown, this village is a museum and heritage facility that is home to 16 historical buildings, two museum structures and a preserved three-room log cabin, one of Brown's residences in the late 19th century.
